Bowling Tips & Techniques

Master the basics—from stance to release—and level up your score on our colourful lanes. Perfect for first‑timers and casual pros.

1) Find your start

Stand just over four comfortable steps from the foul line. Most players use a simple four‑step approach that ends in a gentle slide.

2) The push‑away

On your first step, extend the ball forward at arm’s length. This builds rhythm and momentum so you don’t need muscle power.

3) Smooth swing & slide

Let the ball swing naturally as you step. Use your opposite arm for balance. On the final step, slide and release in one smooth motion.

Form that feels good

Stance & grip

Choose a ball that fits your fingers snugly and feels 10–16 lb with easy control. Keep feet shoulder‑width apart, knees soft, eyes on your target arrows.

Aim down‑lane

Rather than staring at the pins, aim at the arrows a few metres down the lane. Small steps left/right fine‑tune your angle into the pocket.

Release & follow‑through

Let the thumb exit first, then the fingers add gentle lift. Finish with your arm swinging up toward your target—no sudden stops.

Quick wins

  • ✔️ Start on the same‑side foot as your bowling arm; use your opposite arm for balance.
  • ✔️ Keep steps smooth and slightly quicker near the end—don’t rush the release.
  • ✔️ If shots miss left, move your feet left and keep the same target arrow (and vice versa).
  • ✔️ Use bumpers or lighter balls for juniors; accuracy beats power.

Step 1: Choose Your Service & Time

Etiquette & safety

A few lane‑side courtesies keep games flowing and everyone smiling.

  • • Let the player on your right bowl first if you arrive together at the line.
  • • Only one person on the approach at a time; keep food and drinks off the lanes.
  • • Wear bowling shoes; never cross the foul line—the lane surface is very slippery.
  • • Be kind with celebrations—save the high‑fives for your own lane.

Scoring, simplified

Open frame

Pins you knock down in two rolls are added together. Missed pins don’t carry over.

Spare “/”

All ten pins down in two rolls. Score 10 plus the pins from your next roll.

Strike “X”

All ten down first ball. Score 10 plus pins from your next two rolls. In frame 10 you can earn up to 3 rolls.

Our scoring screens do the maths—focus on your form and celebrate the wins!

Easy practice drills

Arrow lock‑in

Pick one target arrow and roll five balls aiming only at that mark. Adjust your feet, not your eyes, to centre your hits.

Spare saver

Set up single‑pin spares (7 or 10). Practice straight shots with a firm, end‑over‑end release.

Tempo four‑step

Walk your approach without the ball: step‑step‑step‑slide. Add the push‑away on step one once it feels smooth.

Pocket finder

Right‑handers aim between 1–3 pins; left‑handers 1–2. Move one board at a time until hits feel solid.
